Book Review: To Heaven and Back

“To Heaven and Back” is the true story of Dr. Mary Neal’s death and brief experience in Heaven before God sent her back to Earth. She drowned in Chile and was dead for at least 20-30 minutes before coming back to life. Her book retells the story based on her perspective as well as the perspective of those around her after the accident. It is an incredible example of how God moves in miraculous ways when His people pray. She humbly tells her story and mentions often how she lives an ordinary life and is just an ordinary person who God has chosen to use in this way.

Dr. Neal admits that she was a skeptic about these experiences before this happened to her. I admittedly am as well; however, her quote on page 205 spoke to that very well:

Many have said that my experience is remarkable. Perhaps it is. What I find more remarkable, however, is how readily many people in our society believe outlandish and unsubstantiated urban myths and conspiracies, yet disregard thousands of personal and consistent testimonies of miracles and near-death experiences from people throughout all cultures and religions.

I really enjoyed this book and especially loved the lessons that she learned throughout this experience that can be applied to all of us: pray, forgive, treasure each day, and believe that God has an incredible plan for us all–even when we can’t see what He is doing…we’ll get it at the end. 🙂
