This Garfield comic creates a perfect intro to what I want to rant about today.
Last week, as I was walking through the mall searching for the perfect dress for Alli’s wedding, I passed by a store with this sign:
“Now offering Plus Sizes: 12-24”
Excuse me? Since when is a 12, or even a 14, a plus-size?! The average woman in America is a size 12–and that is NOT a plus size.
When I watch the media and then observe its effects on the young girls with which I work, I realize that more and more they are pressuring girls to be WAY too skinny–and many girls truly believe that they must be a twig in order for men to find them attractive. They are SO wrong!
That’s why I chose this Garfield comic to precede this mini-rant. Girls: Be healthy, but don’t make yourself ill trying to be what society says is “beautiful.” Society is WRONG about that!! The Lord has made us all beautiful in different ways–and we don’t have to look like the air-brushed models on magazines!
Okay, I’m done. I just couldn’t believe that sign. Be happy with who God has made you to be–it’s okay to improve your appearance, but do it for YOURSELF, not for others.
