Donald Miller…

It is rare that I find an author that grabs my attention from the very first sentence, and keeps my attention through 2 other books of his. Donald Miller has done this to me, and I must say that it has been an incredible journey.

I am currently reading “Searching For God Knows What”–the third book of his that I have read in a month.

Last night, I read part of chapter nine, which is titled “Jesus.” He goes through several of the characteristics of Jesus that never really struck him until he read through the gospels 10 times in a row.

Here’s the passage that made me put the book down because I had to think about it:

“In the last chapter of his gospel, John shows the unending nature of Christ’s patience with people. Jesus has risen from the dead and already revealed Himself to the disciples, and yet some of them, including Peter, have gone fishing. Jesus searches out these guys and finds them fishing. They don’t recognize Him on the distant shore, and so the Lord calls to them and asks if they have had any success fishing. “No,” they reply, and so Christ tells them to cast their net on the other side of the boat. The disciples do this and find so many fish they can’t pull the net into the boat (See John 21:1-6). This is the same miracle Christ performed when He first met Peter, asking him to follow Him, telling Peter He would make him a fisher of men (see Matthew 4:18-19).

“My friend David observes a few interesting dynamics in this scene. The first idea is that Peter had spent the last three years traveling with Christ, watching miracles be performed, listening to Jesus’ proclamations about His Godhead, and noting the many prophecies that were being fulfilled daily, and yet after all of this, he is back where Jesus had found him: fishing. The second observation is the number of times John mentions the actual presence of fish. John says they were fishing, John gives the exact number of fish they caught, John says the fish were dragged to the shore where they were sitting, John says Christ made a fire and cooked them breakfast, leading us to assume they were eating fish (See John 21:1-13).

“John then goes into detail about a conversation Jesus had with Peter. In the conversation, Jesus says to Peter, “Do you love me more than these?” (21:15 NKJV). David wonders if Christ is talking not about the other disciples, as I first thought when I read the text, but rather about the fish. After all, John isn’t a writer who wastes words, and he did bring up the fish several times, hardly mentioning the other disciples…”

Wow…when I read that it really struck me…these men had been impacted by Jesus Himself…He came back from the dead, and they knew He was alive…yet they went back to what they knew, what was comfortable–fishing…their old life…

How often am I tempted to just do what is “comfortable” or what is easy? How often do I have an incredible experience with God, and then soon after act like it never happened? How often do I continue doing things the way that they’ve always been done, or how often do I go along with “religion” or “party lines” rather than doing what I know in my heart would be better?

Jesus is incredibly patient…and while I have always “known” that, it hit me in a new way last night. Lots of things are changing inside of me, and I’m just beginning to be able to put words to these struggles and revelations…Jesus is patient with us as we begin to finally figure things out…and I am so grateful!

God is good!

Just When I Think California Can’t Get ANY Worse…

These are bills that are set to be voted on next week in the California Legislature…I am honestly in SHOCK that such bills would even be drafted! This information was taken from the Capitol Resource Institute (CRI).

SB1437: This bill prohibits any school instruction or school-sponsored activity that “reflects adversely” upon persons because of their gender (actual or perceived) and sexual orientation.

The term “reflects adversely” is too nebulous and susceptible to broad interpretation. Application of this terminology could prohibit the use of “mom and dad” or “husband and wife” in textbooks. It could also result in gender-neutral restrooms, locker rooms sports teams and dress codes.

AB 1207: This attack on religious candidates for public office would curtail their ability to express personal religious beliefs. AB 1207 would add to the Code of Fair Political Practices the requirement they not “use or permit any appeal to negative prejudices based on, sexual orientation or gender identity.” Such language could be interpreted to mean that candidates are not allowed to support traditional marriage since that could be construed as appealing to negative prejudices about homosexuals.

Our country was founded upon the ability to freely express personal beliefs, including religious beliefs. This subversive legislation will certainly stifle the ability of candidates to express such beliefs.

AB 2510: would require the Attorney General’s office, working with the State Department of Education, to survey students on bias-related discrimination and harassment incidents in public schools. 7th, 9th and 11th graders in public schools will be forced to fill out questionnaires asking whether they have experienced bullying, discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation or gender (actual or perceived). The results of this survey will then be compiled into a biennial report by the Attorney General’s office. Surveys of this nature are not only an invasion of students’ personal beliefs and experiences, they are an intrusion into the jurisdiction of parents’ authority. These surveys could also be used to search for isolated so-called “incidents” of harassment in order to bolster arguments for more pro-homosexual legislation, such as AB 606 and AB 1056.

Some others to watch:

SB 1471—New Sex Education Requirements

Scheduled for Assembly Appropriations Committee, Thursday, August 17th.
This bill prohibits state-funded programs from “promoting bias against any persons on the basis of gender (actual or perceived) and sexual orientation.” This could result in sex education classes teaching homosexual sex as well as heterosexual intercourse.

SB 1678—Home Intervention Program

Scheduled for Assembly Appropriations Committee, Thursday, August 17th.
This bill would use $20 million in tax payer funding to encourage school employees to visit students’ homes when the student has failed the California High School Exit Exam. Such intrusion into the home seeks to usurp the authority of parents.

AB 2583—Pharmacists and Abortifacient Drugs

Scheduled for Senate Floor as early as Monday, August 14th.

This bill would require a sign to be posted informing patients of their right to timely access to a prescribed drug or device that a pharmacist has refused to dispense based on moral or religious grounds. This would create a conflict between religious pharmacists and their employers and will inevitably conflict with religious freedom rights.

Almost there!

A few months ago, I decided that I would grow my hair out and donate my hair to a worthy cause. Well, I’m almost there! In 1-2 months I will be able to send my 10″ of hair to Florida to make a child smile…It has been really hard to keep growing my hair, but the thought of a child with cancer being able to smile because they have hair again makes it worth the while! 🙂

In other news, two more weddings to go this summer! Next weekend, I’m flying up to see Chris and Mandy get married, and Labor Day weekend I’ll fly up to see my friends Lisa and Derek get married. I really do love weddings! It’s so amazing to think that so many of my friends are celebrating their first anniversary this summer/year. 🙂

My boss, Mike, comes back to work on Monday! After two and a half months, he has finally been released to return to work. I am so excited! I’ll be doing some baking this weekend in order to properly welcome him back 🙂 (I bake all the time for my coworkers)…Afterall, he’s been gone a long time!

My management development process is going along very well…I am loving the added responsibility–and it’s only going to get better. 🙂

Life is going very well…I couldn’t be happier! 🙂

Pictures from Last Weekend…

These pictures were taken last weekend, in Mendocino County…I LOVE Northern California! SOOO beautiful…enjoy!

By the way–the lighthouse seen below was the lighthouse used in the movie “The Majestic.” The whole movie was filmed in NorCal. 🙂

Weekend in Northwestern California…

Thursday: Flew to Sacramento, where my Mom picked me up and we went to Vacaville to stay the night.

Friday: Begin our road trip, through Western Napa Valley, up to Mendocino County. The high temperature was 63 degrees!! 🙂 Amazing. Pictures to follow. Drove inland to our hotel.

Saturday: Family reunion (our 45th annual) at Clear Lake. Great time with family, and the weather was fairly pleasant! I am the host for next year’s reunion–the first one in my generation to host a reunion! Now to find the perfect location…

Sunday: Goodbye until next year to family…beautiful drive through Eastern Napa Valley (Calistoga, etc.)…shopping in Vacaville…flight back to Ontario.

It was a great weekend, beautiful scenery…Northern California is TRULY the best part of the state! 🙂

Pictures to follow…

Busy!!

Life is busy, but great!

My cousins Kristin and Michael were down here last weekend, and we spent the time sightseeing around SoCal. I took them to The Getty (world famous art museum), Hollywood, Mulholland Drive, La Brea Tar Pits, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach (and the PCH in between those two beaches), IKEA, etc.

This weekend I am flying to NorCal for the 44th annual Madole Family Reunion (my mom’s grandmother’s side of the family). I am excited! Before the reunion, we’re going to the coast, where it is supposed to be 60 degrees. 🙂

After this weekend, my life will be back to normal. Only two more trips planned for the next two months–both are to NorCal for weddings. 🙂 After Labor Day weekend, I will have earned another free ticket on Southwest–I’ve already earned one this year alone!

Life is good…:)

How I Spent Saturday…

A month or so ago, I posted about how we found my Dad’s biological family, and present that to him for Father’s Day. However, I removed the post because I realized that some key people did not yet know the news, and I didn’t want them to find out through my blog. Now that everyone knows, I can talk about it. 🙂

My parents and my brother came down this weekend so that my Dad could meet some of his siblings, and his biological father. It was an incredible day yesterday! I had already met all of the siblings who were present, as well as my biological grandfather, so I felt comfortable, which I think helped my Dad.

The “Nature vs. Nurture” debate is very interesting to all of us now, as we have seen just how much of a factor genetics play in someone’s character and personality…my Dad and his siblings are SOOOO much alike, and they had never met before yesterday. It’s incredible!

Here are some pictures of the day–it was a really great day!

Thoughts on Israel…

As a native Californian, I am very familiar with earthquakes. Pressure builds along the fault, the tectonic plates rub against each other, creating friction, pressure and tension, until finally the pressure just has to be released in the form of an earthquake. After that, things are peaceful–for an indefinite period of time.

That’s the analogy that came to mind over the past 24 hours as I read about Israel/Lebanon…I think the pressure became too much for anyone to handle, and it had to be released…

…but I don’t like this…it is amazing to watch this all happen, as this is something that I have been studying for the past few months…

We knew it would happen, but I didn’t expect it this week…
