A “One Way” sign is placed at the end of our alley.
In the eight years that we have lived here, it’s been fascinating to watch people ignore it, thinking that it doesn’t apply to them. We’ve almost been hit several times (both on foot and in the car) because people choose to disobey the rule. After all, it’s inconvenient.
In reality, it applies to everyone and it’s there for a good reason: there is limited visibility from both directions in that spot, and turning right is unsafe. Yet, many think it’s okay to do what they want.
Road signs of all types exist for a reason. Sometimes they are placed after something bad happens, to warn others and prevent danger. Experts are brought in to assess safe speed limits, etc. to keep us safe, not to take our fun away.
Laws and rules GIVE US FREEDOM. They give us life (or allow us to keep it). They establish order which provides us all with safety and happiness. Laws matter.
No one should be allowed to go as fast as they want, turn in the wrong direction, etc. because they feel like it. Their desire to be selfish endangers others (and themselves). Laws are put into place and enforced accordingly for society’s greater good, not randomly.
(This post isn’t only about road signs, by the way. When judges are ignored, we lose necessary guardrails on unchecked power. Laws matter. No one is above the law.)
