Originals…

Hoy es martesnada especial, pero hoy es un regalo de el Senor.

(every once in awhile I feel like using my Spanish skills!)

Today holds the promise of being a good day…

…my mentor is returning from a vacation in Chicago…

…I feel great, no allergy problems today…

…the sun is shining–it’s going to be a very warm (HOT) day…

…my prayer time was really good this morning…

I posted a quote yesterday that has caused me to think quite a bit:

“Let God be as original with others as he was with you.”
–Oswald Chambers

I know at times I am frustrated with people because we do things differently…or I see something in someone that I wish I possessed…and I often forget that God created us all to be individuals…even down to physical things, like fingerprints…

I am so quick to see “faults” in others, but so quick to overlook those which I possess…and yet, are they really “faults” persay? Or did God give me that characteristic for a reason?

I believe that He created us to be exactly how He wants us to be! He is a perfect God, and does not make mistakes…yet I question His judgment and His creativity so often! The worst is that I often criticize His judgment in creating ME…I often ask, “What was He thinking?”

I am…

imperfect…

musical…

short…

green-eyed…

kinda loud…

intelligent…

artistic…

stubborn…

verbal…

compassionate…

emotional…

punctual…

obsessive/compulsive at times…

friendly…

And the list goes on…many of these things are a cause of frustration in my life…and I just have to realize that they are things that are either in my life for a purpose, or things that I can work on…and I also have to realize that I am “wonderfully made” (Psalm 139), and that means that I’m “not so bad” 🙂 afterall.

I am an original…

Today (and always) I need to see others as God sees them…as originals…

New commenting format…

Well, I gave the Blogger commenting format a chance…but I really don’t like the anonymous comments that turn up because the commenters aren’t members. So I decided to go back to using HaloScan. I apologize for the comments that have now disappeared! I couldn’t figure out how to keep them…so you’ll just have to comment again!

Anyway, I’m back to using HaloScan for good now. Happy commenting!

About the picture below…

So, a friend pointed out tonight what I was doing in the picture to make it look like I was flipping off the camera…I didn’t think of this, but I always play with my ring (that is on my left ring finger) with my thumb, which pushes the middle finger out more. That is what I was doing in the picture!

Thanks, friend, for solving this mystery. I could not figure out what on earth I had been doing!!

Just a thought…

Just found this quote, and thought it was worth posting…and pondering…

“Let God be as original with others as he was with you.” –Oswald Chambers

Perhaps I’ll write more on this later…

My VBS helpers…

My wonderful helpers!! Bella, Chris and Lesa — VBS 2004.

So, except for one thing, this is a great picture! I won’t say what that one thing is…

These two were life-savers during VBS, and helped me all week with the rowdy bunch I had in class. What wonderful youth they are!

What a weekend…

What a great weekend! My parents came down (a semi-business trip for my Dad), and it was great to spend time with them. They took me shopping, too, which was very much appreciated! I have food now! 🙂

My apartment is beginning to look “put together.” I bought some artwork yesterday to create an Italian themed kitchen–very excited about that!

Church today was great…our worship team was right on musically today, which of course helps the congregation to worship… And, once again, the Lord took a very familiar passage of scripture and made it completely new to me. I was amazed, and I want to share with you the “revelation” that was given. If you’d already known this, it’s good review anyway! 🙂

We were reading from Luke 16:19-31, which is the story of the Rich Man and the Beggar (Lazarus). The first thing Pastor Tom pointed out was that Jesus starts this parable differently than His other parables. Instead of saying that “life is like…” or “it’s as if…”, He begins by saying that “There was a rich man…” My pastor suggested that perhaps this was a historical story–about someone that Jesus knew (since He is God and all)…I had NEVER noticed that! It’s an interesting point to ponder!

But that is NOT the revelation I am talking about in this post, so we’ll move on. 🙂

To summarize the story, the rich man had many luxuries, and never shared them with Lazarus, a beggar who sat outside his gate each day. The rich man was selfish, greedy, etc. They both died, and Lazarus was taken to heaven while the rich man went to hell. He looked up and saw Lazarus with Abraham, and he asked Abraham to have Lazarus dip his fingers into water and drip some water onto the rich man’s tongue.

Abraham said that was not possible because of the chasm that exists between the two places, which makes it impossible for people to travel between the two. He also says that Lazarus is now receiving his blessings, and that the rich man received his on earth.

This is where my eyes were opened…

“[The rich man] answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'”
(Luke 16:27-31)

This parable was more than likely told a year before Jesus would travel back to Jerusalem for the final time. He was, I’d assume, aware of His destiny by this time…

And before today, I hadn’t really thought much about the deeper meaning of this parable. I can’t honestly tell you what I used to think it meant, because today it was made SO clear!

If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.

“Abraham” in this parable wasn’t just talking about Lazarus rising from the dead! He was talking about JESUS!!

The religious leaders had ALL the evidence in the Torah and in the books of the law…the Prophets had foretold of Jesus’ coming, but they didn’t listen. He fulfilled all the prophecies, but they made excuses…

They saw miracles…they saw blind men see, they saw lepers cured, they saw lame men walk again. They saw 5,000 men (not even including the women and children) fed with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. And they didn’t listen.

And even when Jesus rose from the dead, they didn’t listen.

They were not convinced…and they still aren’t today.

So often we ask for a miracle, we ask for a sign…but, this verse implies that even if we did have signs, we wouldn’t believe. We’d explain the miracle, or we’d come up with excuses…leaving God behind… Unless people realize that the Bible is the Word of God, and they believe in the messages therein, they would never believe just because someone rose from the dead and told them that it was true.

I just wanted to share. It seriously was like this lightbulb appeared above my head today as we were reading this passage. God placed this revelation inside my heart, giving me something new to ponder…I LOVE how He does that!

Off to Ontario to see my dear friend Cara! May your day be blessed!

One less APU olympian…

I just discovered that APU’s own Vivian Chukwuemeka was omitted from Nigeria’s Olympic team! Why? Because the committee is less than “fair”, from what I hear. Read the article in Sports Illustrated.

Seriously, this annoys me so much! She is SO talented, and could bring honor to her country…but because she has had “confrontations” with the committee in the past, she was not selected. They say it is because she failed to meet the qualifications during the trials; however, two other girls were allowed to compete even though they did not meet the standards.

Anyway, please read the article. I’m just so sad because she has worked so hard, and she is such an amazing person!

Debate Team

I once again would like to call attention to the new blog “Debate Team” which is linked on my sidebar. It is an ongoing discussion forum with 5 contributors (including yours truly), and it is beginning to pick up speed!

If you have anything you’d like for us to debate, post a comment on there, and someone will probably post about it!

Check it out!

To watch TV or not to watch TV?

As I have been pondering what living a holy life means for me personally, one thing that the Lord encouraged me to do was to fast from secular entertainment (music, TV, and movies)…

Today is the “last day” of my fast (which I know that I have not announced on here that I was even doing that…that was intentional, since Jesus tells us to not advertise our fasting)…

I have not watched TV in a month, and have only watched one movie (and that was with my youth group)…and you know what I have discovered? I really haven’t missed it!

I am going to pray some more about the next course of action; however, I believe that I will probably pay just enough attention to what is going on to be able to relate to the youth with which I work, so that I am not “out of touch,” but that I will not watch TV/movies much at all.

It’s just not worth my time, honestly. An occasional movie will be enjoyable, but really, I have noticed just how much more time I have had! So much more time for reading, reflecting, praying, spending time with friends and family…THOSE are the important things in life to me. I know that movies are an art-form, and that most are meaningful…but, I just don’t really know that I want to consume my time with that form of entertainment! I’d much rather spend 30 minutes conversing with my roommates than watching a sitcom on television.

To clarify: This does NOT mean that I look down upon those who do choose to watch these things! AT ALL! This is a personal conviction, and I honestly don’t care what others do with their time. I just wanted to make that clear–if you watch TV, that’s totally fine! 🙂 I know that some may take offense at this post, or think that I am making a jab at others–but honestly, I am not doing any such thing!

I think that I will follow the wisdom in Psalm 119:37–

“Turn my eyes away from worthless things;

preserve my life according to your word.”

And Psalm 101:2a-3b

“I will be careful to lead a blameless life…I will set before my eyes

no vile thing.”

Life leads us on interesting journeys, and I anxiously await

discovering where the Lord will next lead me!

Concert on the Lawn…coming soon!

Not too much to say today! Finally was able to get into my boss’s office, to get the files of work that I was supposed to be doing while he is on vacation in the Midwest…so I have plenty to keep me occupied!

Last night’s worship team practice was wonderful…it was the first time in 3 weeks that our whole team has been there, and as we practiced, it was an incredible time of worship.

We also began preparing for our church’s first annual “Concert on the Lawn”, which is August 13th, at 7pm. Our pastor decided that it was time to share the collective talent of the worship team members, so we are doing a concert!

If you live in the area, our church is First Baptist Church of Glendora, located at 505 N. Grand Avenue, Glendora (California).

This concert will be a time of worship led by the worship team, but will also showcase the worship team members. I am singing two songs (and playing guitar for those songs), and most of the worship team members are doing something as well. We have SO many talented musicians, many of which have their own bands and write their own music. I’d encourage you to come, bring friends, for a great night of fellowship and great music!
