NorCal Weekend for Grandpa Fay’s 80th Birthday…

What a great (but quick) weekend! I flew home this weekend for my Grandpa’s 80th birthday party. About 75 people came, and it was an awesome celebration of his amazing life. I’m so blessed to have the family that I do! I posted a few pictures for now…more to come later…we had a family photo shoot with a pro photographer, so I’ll post those once we have them. πŸ™‚

You can see my pictures on Facebook if you’d like… πŸ™‚

“God digs camping…”

I’ve been reading “The Irresistible Revolution“–which is one of the most challenging books I’ve ever read. Talk about turning your world upside down! It’s really making me think about how Jesus feels about certain issues, and I’m really struggling to discern how I should feel/live/act/believe according to what the Gospel clearly preaches…and some of these points and my new feelings about them go against everything I’ve always believed/thought/felt…and that’s hard to swallow sometimes…

One of the parts I was reading tonight was about camping (sorta). The author points out that in the Old Testament, God is all about tents–simple, temporary dwelling places. He doesn’t want the Israelites to build anything big or permanent–He says “I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.” (2 Samuel 7:5-6)…

The author then says:

God just digs camping. No wonder when I think of my most powerful encounters with God they seem to involve camping of some kind…”

How absolutely true that is! For me, youth camp was absolutely foundational to who I am today…retreats…even simple camping trips are when I feel like God is the most near…and, those times are in very simple surroundings–not in multi-million dollar buildings with fancy sound systems and other decorations…

The author also says:

No doubt there is power in corporate worship, and there are times when I feel God among the masses…but it has had nothing to do with the color of the carpet or the comfort of the chairs.” (pg. 325)

Last weekend, at our missions retreat, they challenged us to think about how we as Christians spend our money…on fancy buildings, on material things…they gave us statistics to back up these claims…and it was astonishing to see that so much of our money stays here, at home, in our Christian institutions, rather than giving to those who are in need/going to the unreached nations…and it made us very sad…and some guilt was involved…

So that has created yet another thing for me to ponder, to struggle with, to pray about…

As we build our buildings, human temples are being destroyed by hunger and homelessness. The early prophets would say that a church that spends millions of dollars on buildings while her children are starving is guilty of murder. Imagine the scene in a biological family: a father building a mansion while his children are going hungry. He’d be institutionalized or jailed. How much more preposterous should this be in our family of rebirth, in which we have been given new eyes to see others as brothers and sisters?” (Pg. 330)

The Gospel is not easy, and it’s not comfortable…but that’s what is making me fall more in love with it each day.

We have a God who enters the world through smallness–a baby refugee, a homeless rabbi, the lilies and the sparrows. We have a God who values the little offering of a couple of coins from a widow over the mega charity of millionaires. We have a God who speaks through little people–a stuttering spokesman named Moses; the stubborn donkey of Balaam; a lying brothel owner named Rahab; an adulterous king named David; a ragtag bunch of disciples who betrayed, doubted, and denied; and a converted terrorist named Paul…God is indeed taking over the world, but it is happening through little acts of love.”

Any thoughts? Comments? πŸ™‚ Every Christian should read this book…it will rock your world… πŸ™‚

So much to ponder…

The Lord has truly responded to my prayer to be “uncomfortable”, and He’s using so many different books/experiences/people to challenge me!

It started in January, with our “M3” training day for all APU mission team leaders…I walked away that day with a fresh perspective on the Lord’s call on my life (missions), as well as some new things to ponder…and I’m still pondering them…

The weekend after that was “Passion”…again, challenging stuff presented there…still trying to work through it all, deciding how to apply it to my life…

Currently, I’m reading “The Irresistible Revolution” by Shane Claiborne…wow…talk about humbling…and challenging…

Then, there was the retreat this weekend, for all the APU mission teams (pictures can be found here, here, and here–there are three albums, LOL)…amazing time getting to know my team–as well as other leaders…but there were also some really challenging times–seeing the world in new ways…and I am not the same after this weekend.

I am loving this journey, this time of being “uncomfortable”…and I know that there is more to come! Praise the Lord! I am so excited about growing, learning, and becoming continually more like Jesus…

I’ll try to blog about more specific things that happened this weekend at some point…I think I’m getting sick (sore throat right now), so I’d better just rest…

God is so good… πŸ™‚

Valentine’s Day…

You know, I don’t really care that I am single and don’t have a “valentine”–I know that will come in time. To me, Valentine’s Day is a dumb holiday anyway…I want my loved ones to know EVERY day that they are loved and special. Oh well…

So I was thinking about my best Valentine’s Day ever and my worst one ever…

Worst: 2006

I had just started at ADP (my second week), and as I’m parking my car that morning (in the really small spots that ADP has, grrrr) I hit the car next to me. I freaked out! It wasn’t that bad, but the car was a lot newer than mine, and it was a new job, so I was nervous. I left a note (with shaky handwriting), and waited the whole day to hear from him/her…finally, around 6pm, he called. He was super nice–turns out that he was a full-time pastor before working at ADP–and didn’t end up filing an insurance claim. Still, I ended up on the couch, by myself, with a bowl of ColdStone icecream that night…and that was my Valentine’s Day.

Best: 2004

I was very very close to a (former) friend of mine who was going through a really tough time. So, I decided to pull one of my infamous schemes and fly to Chicago to surprise him and spend the weekend there. The planning was amazing (I’m definitely good at event planning/scheming πŸ™‚ )…and he had no idea. I planned everything down to the very smallest details, and it brought so much joy to me to see him filled with joy and surprise. On Valentine’s Day, we went to Chicago (and I think it was 14 degrees) for the day…had a great dinner…and then saw the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (amazing!)…I got to claim two more states on that trip, three total (Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan) because we went to his hometown to meet his family…even though I’m no longer friends with this person, that Valentine’s Day was the best one that I’ve had to this day…

In other news–I’m spending the weekend (beginning at 6am Friday) north of Santa Barbara, on a mountain with a “panoramic view of the ocean”…it’s going to be an awesome weekend, and I’m totally looking forward to it. All of the APU mission teams are heading up there, and I know that the Lord is going to move in mighty ways! πŸ™‚

Have a great February 14th!

Bounty Hunter!

p1013859.jpg

If you watch “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, and if you happened to watch it tonight, you saw this monster truck, “Bounty Hunter”, on the show…my dad painted this monster truck and still does the touch-ups and the body work/fiberglassing!! So awesome to see it (and the driver, Jimmy Creten) on this show!

If you click here , and scroll to the bottom, you’ll see where it says “Klouse”…that’s my dad. It’s an inside joke πŸ™‚

Just had to post that…because I’m slightly proud of my dad… πŸ™‚

Unbelievable…

There are very few things that make me nearly ashamed of living in California…what I’m about to blog about is definitely one of them.

Berkeley (in the Bay Area) is known for it’s extreme liberalism, and is one of the places that has given California such a terrible reputation…but I cannot believe the latest headlines (well, from last week…I’m a little behind the times)…

Check out this video of the protest…

It’s one thing to protest the war, but it’s a completely different issue when the troops are being protested–ESPECIALLY at their funerals. Our troops are not “unwelcome intruders”!! I have zero tolerance for this garbage. We live in a country that allows us to make free choices, and those who enlist have made that decision. Just because the protesters don’t agree with the war doesn’t mean that they should be so disrespectful of their fellow Americans!

Soap box done… πŸ™‚

I’d say more, but I’m running on less than five hours of sleep, and my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders today. πŸ™‚

Politics and other things…

Yesterday was somewhat difficult for me, as I had to decide who I could stomach voting for in the presidential primary…

…and I voted for Fred Thompson. Yes, I know he dropped out of the race…but I am a firm believer in principle over power, and I wanted to make a statement. According to the Sec. of State’s website, 45,000 other Californians felt the same way (about Fred). I just couldn’t handle voting for ANY other candidate.

I was glad to see that it appears Californians educated themselves about the propositions this year! I was pleased with the results.

Speaking of education (political), I realized something about talk radio this morning. It makes so much sense, when you consider the incredible length of time people spend in their cars in Los Angeles, commuting…that’s the way to get your point across. Get ’em when they can’t escape (except for changing the station) πŸ™‚

Also, I thought it was interesting to read this article about “fabulous” Nancy Pelosi trying to woo the NASCAR fans…sorry, but as a NASCAR fan, I’m pretty confident in saying that it’s a losing battle. NASCAR culture is pretty stubborn! I did like, however, how the article says that the NASCAR vote is “coveted.” Awesome!

My thoughts on 2008: I would be willing to bet that we will have a Democratic president. It’s just how it goes–look back historically at presidents who were somewhat unfavorable…the other party wins… That’s my prediction. So, now my focus turns to somehow getting Obama the nomination. πŸ™‚ Because I couldn’t handle Hillary in office. Not at all. Yes, I realize that God is completely sovereign, and I know that He is ultimately in control, not the president, but…I still want to do my part and choose the best person for the job.

In other news, three of my friends and I started our “lifestyle change” (i.e. diet) yesterday, and I’ve already lost 2.4 lbs. Woo hoo! My goal is to lose 10 by Easter, and if I do, I’ll buy myself a new Easter dress. πŸ™‚

I’m sure there’s more that I could write about, but that’s about all I can do right now… πŸ™‚

Picture from Passion…and other things…

I think I’m in this picture…I sat in the same spot each session, and I think I can see myself! Anyway, just a glimpse of what it was like…

Spent yesterday in Watts, in “the projects”, with the Dream Center. I took a group from my church down there, and it was an incredible experience, as always. Very humbling…

Tonight we took our New Orleans team to a creole/cajun restaurant in L.A. to experienceΒ  a “taste” of New Orleans…such fun!

Still need to figure out who to vote for…two days!

More later…
